Simply put, it's the application of learning theory to writing training experiences.
But let's break that down a little.
Instructional design is about creating effective learning experiences. It's reasonably easy to bring together some teaching materials and deliver a session on something. Instructional design however uses a more systematic approach.
- Before writing content, we must begin with working out what the learners should be able to do after going through the session. In other words, we should always start with learning objectives. This helps ensure the training is actually effective and the audience learns something
- Instructional design considers ideas from education, psychology, and even creative writing to craft engaging learning experiences
- Instructional design can be used to create online courses, workshops, textbooks or any other kind of learning material
The funny thing was that when I began to learn instructional design, I realised I was already doing some of these things, I just didn't realise that's why I was doing them.
